Nekolie
My grandfather, Nekolie Mikkelson, died in 1959. I was only 3 years old and barely remember him.
However, I always enjoy my dad’s stories. For example, he often said to my dad and Uncle Leon. “If you don’t like my rules get your feet out from under my table.” Can’t argue with that.
Max Hansen, a friend and customer of my father told me at dinner one night the Nekolie came upon him and some other boys who had damned up the irrigation ditch and were having a swim party. Nekolie told them, “you boys can have your fun and swim today but tomorrow the damn comes out. It’ll be my turn to take the water.” I got the idea that he wasn’t opposed to a little fun but work came first.
Check out his hands on the family photo. Those are the hands of a man who worked his entire life. From what my dad said, no one could out work Nekolie.
I love the photo of Nekolie and his work horse. Imagine the transition from the work horse to the tractor. Leon and Gene claim to have pushed him to his first tractor. Apparently, he was adverse to going into debt for a tractor that’d cost him gas and maintenance.
Unfortunately, health problems took him before his time. He lost his oldest son and his daughter Lorraine. He did not have the easiest life.
