The Mikkelsen Patriarch, Neils Mikkelsen, was born in Denmark in 1850.  He joined the Mormon Church and came to Utah to improve his fortune.  He homesteaded some property in Fountain Green, Utah.  He had 3 children and found time to go on two missions back to Denmark. mikkelsonfamily_webHis 2nd son was my grandfather Nekolie.  The photo included Nekolie and his wife Luella and their children. Nekolie was born to work.  He had three sons.  Tragically, his oldest son, Grant, was killed in an automobile versus horse and wagon accident.  Just as he finally had help on the farm his son was taken from him.  His other sons soon stepped in to help with the family farm.  Leon Mikkelson, bottom left, was my uncle who eventually took over the reins of the family farm.  My father, Eugene Mikkelson, bottom right, left the farm for Salt Lake City. I think he probably agrees with Henry David Thoreau the “the worse thing that can happen to a man is the he inherit a farm, for he will toil the rest of his day…”  Yes, I need to look that quote up to get it more accurate. My father loved sports.  As I write this in 2016 he’s 85 years old and still loves golf and bowling.  He’s pretty good at both.  He also was born to work.  He still works most days as a barber.  “Get’s me out of the house,” he says.
