I grew up attending church at the LDS Millcreek 3rd Ward on 6th East and 39th South which is now part of South Salt Lake City. My family wasn’t pious but we did participate in the activities of the Millcreek 3rd Ward. There were some great people in the neighborhood and ward. There were at least 30 boys and girls my age. If you didn’t have friends in my neighborhood it was your own fault.
The Chapel was built in the late 1800s (started in 1866, finished in 1875. Recreation hall added in 1915) and was a terrific place to listen to a sermon…even a boring sermon. The chapel had a beautiful stained glass window on the back wall behind the pulpit. There was a similar window on the outside of the building facing 39th South. If you couldn’t get inspired from the speaker you could concentrate on Jesus holding the baby lamb. I’d love to attend that old chapel one last time.
In addition to the stained glass, the back wall included a painted mural of the earth and heavens. I loved floating off into the meadows, the mountains, the daylight sky and then the heavens (stars and moon) at the top of the mural. It was an inspiration to sit and contemplate on the beautiful earth that good so graciously gave us. Hopefully, we learned to take good care of it.

Somebody with a bit of historical appreciation saved the windows when the building was torn down. You can see the windows at the Millcreek Stake house. My guess is the window on the right was the window from outside. (It seems a little more faded from weather). The windows appear to be duplicates, which I didn’t realize until I see them side by side. It’d be great if we start adding this type of artwork to our new buildings. We could start a “Give an Artist a Job” campaign.
